  1. From what i previously knew about Afghanistan i've learned that it is a 3rd world country with many problems with its economy and government. After reading the book i just realized how they treat women in Afghanistan and that there are even laws that prevent women from doing things. It was a definite shock to me because we live in the 21st century now and many things have changed for women since the 1800's. I thought that Afghanistan would have more women rights then then told.

  2. I learned a couple of things while reading the novel.I learned that Afghanistan had alot of war and terrorism in the country.i was also surprised when i read in the novel that some men could have more than one spouse. I also learned that some women are treated badly by their husband's and dont have enough freedom.

  3. After reading, I learned about Afghan culture and picked up a few Farsi words like "harami". I never really had much thought or care about Afghanistan, to be honest.

I'm surprised by the lack of humanity and the lack of women rights in Afghanistan, especially when the Taliban took over. I'm also surprised about how the ethnic groups in Afghanistan fight to be in power instead of joining together as one to build a better country.

  4. I knew about the war there since 2001, but I never knew it was always under constant war. I was also shocked to hear that the men can have more than one wife, and they do. They think it is completely normal but to us it's not. Some of the women in Afghanistan still wore make-up and smoked cigarettes even though it was against the law, so not everyone agrees with what is going on.

  5. I knew about the war that happened in Afghanistan about the Taliban when I read The Kite Runner, and after reading Thousand Splendid Suns i felt really very sad for all females in Afghanistan because of their treatment by crazy males (Rasheed). Unjust laws for women really made me feel very sad(for example no make up, no education and other terrible laws). Even though there is constant war with the Taliban, Afghanistan is trying to become more modern. I know this because i read the news and it said that Burger King and Pizza Hut are opening up in Afghanistan and unjust laws for women have changed.

  6. I learned most of my info about the Afghanistan war through the book the Kite Runner as kanav said. Thosand Splendid Suns depicted the life of a female more than the Kite Runner. I learned that the feamles are seen as a minority in their own country and dont have as much chances as the men. For example, Laila was the smartest student in her class but she ended up with Rasheed by a forced marriage.

  7. It didnt really surprise me in the sense that Afghanistan's struggles and hardships have been broadcasted on news stations everywhere for years. It also hasn't changed my view of Afganistan because I was already aware of the Talibans and other radicalists that live there. However, I am now more aware of the other many personalities that live in Afghanistan, such as the passive yet hardworking Mariam or the determined and outspoken Mariam. This book shows both the positive and negative aspects of Afghanistan through it's variouse landscapes, characters and events.

  8. The things I learned about Afghanistan did not surprise me because I hear about these types of things all the time by types i mean young wemon marrying men maybe 2 or 3 times their age and meant having multiple wives. But what really did surprise me was how Jalil was a nice to Mariam so forth that she didnt live with him but as soon as Mariam was to stay with him for approximately 2 days 3 of jalil wives informed Mariam that she was to get married and that Jalil approved of it already.

In the times when Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns were written,i found out that women are not allow to leave the house without their husband or older son, can't go to school, and not allowed to be working. Lastly, female were forced to were hijab, sometimes have to share there husband with others.

  10. I wasn't really suprised as to what was going in Afganistan because it is a third world country. Also I agree with Ayan because I too have seen the conditions of Afghanistan in the media. From this novel, I have learned many things, however, the most important lesson was based on how they treated women like garbage. They also didn't let women attend school and wear makeup or anything. They had to cater to the men and follow the orders given to them.

  11. After reading the novel my view about Afghanistan has changed, I have known since 9/11 that Afghanistan is a country in war. However, after reading this book I realize that Afghanistan has always been in war, the people of this country have never really seen peace in their lives. I also realize that we have not been seeing the war torn country correctly, we are not seeing the real damages of war and how the people are being treated. But I know that the rest of the world never really sees what happens in a war torn country. We are sheltered from the cruelties others experience or either we are given information that is not accurate. When I read that the Taliban were actually welcomed in the beginning by the people of Afghanistan, I did not know this but I was also not surprised. A war torn country accepts any help they receive. But they do not understand the real reason why they are being helped. People have selfish needs, which is why the Taliban wanted control. They have their own selfish needs. I was not surprised at the way they treated their women. I kind of expect a country in war not to respect women when they want to survive at any cost.

  12. It actually didn’t change my views of Afghanistan; I’ve always known that it was a country of war and throughout the novel many different wars took place. But one of the things that surprised me was that most men in Afghanistan treat their women in that matter and I still don’t believe it’s all true, but I do believe that there are men like that but not only in Afghanistan, this actually made all men in Afghanistan look bad which I don’t believe is completely true

  13. I think through this book it shows really how Afghanistan is. It is a war torn country, has its problems of course like any other country but this didnt change my views on Afghanistan. We already knew women in Afghanistan and similar countries are treated as though they are inferior. So this did not change my overall view on the country.

  14. After reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, I learned more regarding Afghan culture and issues such as conflict that have always existed in the country. The way the media portrays Afghanistan today shows a misinterpretation of the positive side to the people and environment. Afghanistan is made up of historical traditions and beautiful landscapes that are hidden behind the major headlines of war and conflict. I became more aware of a story that took place in Afghanistan from an intriguing persepctive of two young girls who are impacted by the negative factors of the country. What surprised me most was the lack of rights that women possessed. I was unaware of how badly degraded and mistreated they truly were.

  15. I knew about the situation in Afghanistan prior to reading this book. What I didn't know is how bad it was. Stray rockets blowing people to bits. It's terrible. I cannot comprehend how a person who had just seen a friend or family member killed, could cope with the pain as well as the psychological factors while trying to rebuild their lives.

  16. What i have learned from this novel is that the women of Afganistan have a very horrible life, they have no rights, and they are forced to stay home. They cannot go to school or work, they have to stay home where there are bullets and rockets hitting houses. It happened to Laila's house and i would not be surprised if she was counting the days until another rocket came and hit Rasheed's house this time. Both Mariam and Laila lost all their family members, they do not have anybody but each other. And Maraim did not even have Laila for many years, i would expect that she was depressed for a long time from the abuse from Rasheed and the loneliness, she had no child and she was stuck at home. I was suprised at how the Taliban had no hearts, when Mariam and Laila tried to run away and were caught they begged the Taliban officer and told him what Rasheed was going to do to them and all he said was what a man does is his own business. This novel gives us a more specific view into the lives of Afgani people, unlike the media which could have biases and a motive behind what they are saying.
