thousand splendid suns

When Mariam's husband Rasheed married Laila would you say that it helped Mariam out throughout the book or made her life worse.?

  1. I think that in the end it helped her. It only made her life worse in the beginning later on Mariam and Laila become close friends, almost like mother and daughter. Laila became the source of love Mariam never had.

  2. I think the marriage betwen Rasheed and Laila did help Mariam. Although at first Mariam didnt like Laila because she thought she was stealing Rasheed, they became best friends in the end. Laila and Mariam are good support for eachother because Rasheed is so abusive toward both of them. Laila is also a good person for Mariam to talk to since her childhood was so bad. The became so close especially when mariam risked her life to save Laila.

  3. I agree with Sola and also that it was almost like both Mariam and Laila teamed up and forgot about there differences to get rid of Rasheed.

  4. I also believe that it helped Mariam throughout the book because I belive that Laila gave Mariam confidence which she lack and made her a stronger person emotionally and physically and without their teamwork they wouldnt be able to defeat Rasheed

  5. I totally agree with Ziniira because if you think about Mariam, she was very scared of Rasheed when she got married to him, and when she Laila gets married to Rasheed, Mariam does not like Laila but at the end she gives Mariam confidence and Mariam kills Rasheed.

  6. In the beginning Mariam saw Laila as competition, when she first talked she told her that "I wouldn't hav fed you and washed you and nursed you if I'd known you were going to turn around and steal my husband". For a long time Mariam ignored Laila and just did her work, it was Aziza that brought them together. After that Laila became the daughter that Mariam first lost. Laila completed Mariam's life, without Laila her life would be horrible like it was for many years. She finally was loved by someone and she loved someone.

  7. I agree with Mohamed Ali. Mariam didn't like Laila in the beginning which I would totally agree with because Laila agree to marry Rasheed. Mariam and Laila became really close after that misunderstanding but I think Laila benefit from the relationship as much as Mariam. Mariam treated Laila's kids as her own so Mariam had the experience of having an impact on Aziza's life.

  8. This made her life more worse then it already was. To start with if Mariam never wanted to marry Rasheed how would this make her life better when she is practically forced into marriage with this man?

  9. Obviously it helped her because Mariam finally had someone who knew how she felt and it was because of Layla, Mariam finally felt loved.

  10. Also, I feel as if Laila sort of saved them when she had Rasheed's son because that is what he wanted in the beginning.

  11. Mariams had a hard life, and she was at peace with that, when she was living with Nana and when she was married to Rasheed, although I had hope that her life would turn out better I was doubtful but when Laila married Rasheed and the relationship between the two of them grew I knew that it would help both of the women and that it was only a matter of time before Mariam felt meaning to her life because of Lailas arrival.
