I don't remember the page numbers or the quotes (I don't have the book with me at the moment) but I remember Rasheed mentioning how Aziza doesn't have his or Laila's eye colour. He already had suspicions that it was Tariq's daughter, and I think he asks her about her relationship with him and Laila replies that she only thought of him as a brother, nothing more. When Laila and Rasheed's son, Zalmai, tells his father that a man visited their house that was his mother's friend, I think that confirmed it for Rasheed that Laila was lying.
I agree with Sola.Rashhed was always suspicions of Tariq and Laila's relationship but I also believe he was jealous of their relationship. I think he was jealous of their relationship because he knew they were in love and he can never find anyone to love him like that.
Well I agree with Sola and Barah because Rasheed did mention about how aziza had somenone else's features and also there was one more part where he told laila that he already knew that aziza was tariq's child, but he kept quiet.
I agree with everyone as well. The whole time Rasheed knew that Tariq was alive, and made Laila believe he was dead. Rasheed clearly didn't want Tariq being near Laila because he knew they were in love. And from that Rasheed starting mentioning things that weren't like any of their features. He put two and two together.
I agree with what everyone said.I think that Rasheed already had a strong feeling that Aziza was not his child. Rasheed knew that Tariq and Laila have been in love since they were childhood friends. I also agree with Bara when she said that Rasheed was jealous of their relationship because he knew they were in love. His jealousy also shows when Rasheed paid that man to tell to tell Laila that Tariq died from his injuries.
I agree with everyone’s comments, Rasheed was always suspicious of Aziza’s birth. Rasheed saw Tariq and Laila grow up, he thought ill of their relationship because of how his mind worked. He suspected there was something going on between him. This made him suspicious of Aziza, what you should notice is that when Laila said she was pregnant Rasheed was happy; he did not have any suspicions then. When Laila married Rasheed she was six weeks pregnant, so I think his suspicions were confirmed when Laila probably gave birth before Rasheed had expected and that is was a girl. This is when I think he knew; he also noticed Aziza’s features and guessed then. In the book he mentions “It’s an interesting eye colour she has, Aziza. Don’t you think? It’s neither yours nor mine.” (252). He hinted all of this to Laila, but he probably kept her around because he wanted a son and he wanted Laila. He even said Tariq died to Laila so he could keep her around.
I also agree with you guys, Rasheed always made remarks and hinted it out that Aziza had different features of someone else which clearly gave him clues or question if Aziza was really his.
I agree that Rasheed had suspicions that Aziza wasn't his child and when he asked about the relationship between Laila an Tariq and she replies that he was nothing more than a brother I think he knew she was lying because, I don't remember where in the book, but I'm sure Laila and Tariq were passing Rasheed and Mariam on the street as kids and Rasheed says somethig that refers to the afghan version of Romeo and Juliet and the two of them don't say anything to deny it, meaning ur already knew how the relationship was between the two of them even before Laila becomes his wife.
I think maybe her eyes, hair. Physical traits I would say because I doubt he counted the months till Laila gave birth. I would also agree that Laila maybe gave it away when Rasheed asked about her and Tariq's relationship.
I think the reason he knew was because everyone in the neighbourhood knew that they had something going on, and like he said he isn't stupid. Aziza does not look like him. He knew this and got a person to tell her that Tariq was dead to kill all hope that he was coming back to get her. Doing this he made her subject to him. He used the fact that Aziza is not his child as blackmail, he told Laila “It’s an interesting eye colour she has, Aziza. Don’t you think? It’s neither yours nor mine.” Then he told her that she could be killed for adultery. I believe the only reason that he kept Laila around was because she was able to have children and she ended up giving Rasheed the son he always wanted. If she was sterile like Mariam he would have told the Taliban what she did and she would be dead.
Well I believe Rasheed strong intuition of Aziza not being his daughter was obvious. He made little remarks and comments about Aziza not looking like either of them and her physical features and also, the fact that Rasheed himself knew about Laila and Tariq's scandalous relationship and how close they were.
