To be honest, I think that Nana's suicide was mostly brought upon herself. Nana herself was a miserable character and, to me, seems to exaggerate when describing her sorrows and pain to Mariam. (Really, struggling for 2 days to give birth? With no help? Most people would die even with medical assistance.) I think Nana overreacted when Mariam left, and I think that Nana should have at least waited a while to see if Mariam had truly abandoned her. However I also think that Mariam should not have left Nana when Jalil didn't show up that day as well.
Yes, I do believe that Mariam was the one who led to her mother's suicide, but I also believe that her sickness and her depression led to her death as well. Nana believed that Mariam was the only thing she had in her life, she was very protective over her, and always mentioned that her father, Jalil wasn't a good father and he was ashamed of her. When Jalil told Mariam that he would come and get her Nana already mentioned that he wasn't coming and he was lieing to her. But when Mariam left to go look for her father , Nana warned her and said that she was the only thing she had, and if she left her the Jinn would come back to her and she would have nothing living for. So, even though Mariam knew this and she knew that her mom was sick she still left. Therefore, I believe that if Mariam never left Nana wouldn't become more sick and she wouldn't hang herself.
I think that Mariam was in a way responsible for her mother's death. Her mother had a sickness/disease that affected her mind. Mariam should have stayed and taken care of her sick mother instead of going on that trip.
I think Mariam did have alot to do with her mother Nana's death. When mariam went to go find her father on her birthday, this worried Nana. I think Nana got scared and worried that her daughter was not going to she was going to loose Mariam and than Mariam deserted her.I think it also worried come back, and Nana raised her and felt like Nana because she knew that Jalil was not a nice man and would eventually betray Mariam.
Ithink Mariam did play a role in her mom's death because Mariam chose to left even after her mom said she would die. Personally I think she was a little greedy in going because she just wanted to see Jalil. But on the other hand, her mom was a depressed person who saw life as "the glass is half empty" (i think thats pesimistic.. ). It was bound to happen sooner or later, in this case it happened sooner.
I kind of believe Mariam had something to do with Nana's death but I also believe that Nana was going to commit suicide anyways.Nana was sick so both ways I think she was going to die because of her sickness. But Mariam should take some blame for the death of her mother because her mother poured her heart out to her telling her that without her she has noone.
Although I agree that Nana was sick I think she knew that there was a possibility that Mariam would come back becase she's never betrayed her mother in the past Nana knew she was smothering Marium and may have killed herself out of spite, to make Mariam feel the pain that she felt when she had left to find Jailil. But on the other hand I can see Nana truly believing that Mariam would deserte her fir her father and hung herself because her sickness allowed her to believe death was the only way to stop her pain of desertion.
I agree with Sola that Nana did cause this upon herself. Mullah Faizullah even stated that as a child Nana was troubled and unhappy. It goes to show that not only when Mariam came into her life was she distressed, throughout her whole life she was in the same stage. Part of the reason why i think she did it was because she wanted Mariam to live with the guilt that she made her do it in spite of her going with Jalil.
I strongly believe Mariam was the cause for her mother’s death. I feel this way because she was the one who deserted her and left her vulnerable when she knew that her mother was in a mental state. After her mother pleaded for her to stay, she left her for Jalil and that to her was the ultimate betrayal. In the end, Mariam was the main culprit for the death of Nana.
I agree with the others who have said that Mariam was the cause of Nana’s death. Mariam was the only thing Nana had in her life, and for Mariam to leave like that to see Jalil was wrong. Nana had warned Mariam not to go, but she did and she regretted that mistake for the rest of her life. Mariam should have realised that Nana had believed Mariam was her life line, she was old enough. This broke Nana’s heart and lead to her death. Mariam did not realize how lucky she was to have Nana. Nana could have abandoned Mariam when she was born but she did not. Mariam probably did not realize this because Nana did not treat her the way Jalil treated her. She wanted to be needed by her mother, but what she got form her mother was taunting of her saying she was a “harami”. However, Mariam is not the only person responsible for her mother’s death; I think Nana herself and Jalil are also a cause. Nana even in her childhood was depressed and these reasons probably lead to her suicide. I do not think anyone has mentioned Jalil part in the death. Jalil had ruined Nana’s life; he made her pregnant and would not accept to marry her. He did not appreciate Mariam and Nana at all.
So far i agree with everybody. Mariam led to Nana's death because first of all Nana was a miserable character, and secondly Mariam was all that she had in the world left. Nana could have betrayed Mariam and deserted her , but she did not. She nurtured Mariam and knew that Jalil was a bad man and would eventually betray her. It was Mariam who left Nana and went to Jalil's house despite of Nana telling her that if she went there then Nana would kill herself, because she did not want Mariam to be betrayed and did not want to lose her as all Nana had was Mariam. So I believe that Mariam caused Nana's death.
I think that Mariam's mother was a misrable woman, and really although mariam was the reason Nana killed herself; becuase she felt like she had no one anymore. It was not mariams fault. So i believe that becuase mariam left she hung herself but it was not her fault since nana was always the way she was.
I disagree. I think that Nana would have killed herself eventually because she was a miserable character. Her attitude towards Mariam was usually negative although she did love her. It couldn't have been Mariam's fault because she was young she cant be held accountable for the decision her mother chose.
I do not believe it was Mariam's fault for Nana's death, like the question says she committed suicide. She took her own life, and because of that it was her own fault. She climbed up a tree and hung a rope and tied it around her neck and killed herself, it was not Mariam that tied the rope around her neck, or helped her climb up the tree. Mullah Faizullah told her that Nana was the way she was as a child, and it was not Mariam's fault.
I disagree with everyone who said mariam was the cause of her death because nana took her own life mariam did not kill her. Nana was already emotional sad that Jalil threw her out and said she forced her way on him and she didnt want to lose her own daughter to a selfish man who cares about his reputation more than his rsponsibility
