The phrase "a thousand splendid suns" comes from the poet Saib-e-Tabrizi. This was quoted twice in the novel, once when Laila's family was going to leave Kabul, and when she decided to return Pakistan. Also it was in one of the final lines in the novel, "Mariam is in Laila's heart, where she shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand suns". What do you think the significance of this phrase is, and how it is approprate for this novel.

When I finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, I noticed that the author, Khalid Hosseini, likes to use significant phrases to create emphasis in his stories. In The Kite Runner, the major phrase was: "for you, a thousand times over," which basically means that one would do anything for another individual. When Laila was young, her father once said the phrase: "a thousand splendid suns." At the time, Laila was young, so she could not really reflect on it then. When she matures, Laila begins to understand the true essence of life, so she quotes the phrases linking it to Mariam, her one and true friend. Since Laila could not really comprehened with the phrase her father once told her due to her inexperience in life, her memory is triggered when she experiences the loss of Mariam. The phrase is used to describe both Laila's early memories Kabul and her loyal companion, Mariam.
ReplyDeleteI think the significance of this phrase is that it shows that with everything happening in Kabul, such as the war, there are still people out there who are still happy inside and shine like A Thousand Splendid Suns. Showing that it was a sense of unity to conprehend Laila's story.
