The Taliban forbid "writing books, watching films, and painting pictures;" yet the film Titanic becomes a sensation on the black market. Why would people risk the Taliban’s violence to watch the film?
I believe that they chose to risk watching Titanic because they want someone to save them from their situation, the cruelty that they are put through. They see their lives as the sinking Titanic.
Honestly, I do not know why people were so obsessed over it. It was probably because it was a hit around the world and everyone around the world were watching it. So these people probably wanted to be like them, to relate to them, so they risked their lives to see it. With the violence that they were going through they wanted a release and liked the idea that the Taliban could not stop everything. So that meant they could have fun once in a while without getting caught. It is like a teenager rebelling against their parent's rules.
They probably risked it simply because the Titanic was a getaway from the harsh reality they were living. It allowed them to fantasize and escape into a world of romance and happiness. Every sort of entertainment they had was taken away from them by the Taliban and the Titanic was all they had left.
I believe the people of Afghanistan risked their lives watching the Titanic because they wanted to challenge the authority of the Talibans and to see the limit they can cross.
