Fanta in this part of the novel, was probably insane. she was probably trying to "save the baby" from the white men, as she thought, but i think she was just not in the right mental state. As for her throwing Sanu's baby, it wasn't right, i thought she was probably jealous of Sanu, therefore she took the only think Sanu had; her child.
There was something wrong with Fanta from the beginning of the novel anyways, she was always mean to the kids and even Fomba, nobody liked her. There is a part where Aminata says that something had snapped with the adults on the boat but because she was so young her mind stayed in order, I think this may have contributed to Fantas insanity. The adults on the boat where planning this attack, they were singing after Fantas baby is born we will be free, or something like that, so I believe that Fanta probably planned on killing her baby because she believed it was the only way, and didn't want it to grow up a slave. Why she threw Sanu's baby over board, I'd have to agree with Alex and say that she was jealous. She could have easily killed Sanu's baby the same waybshe killed her own but she chose to throw it into the water, knowing that Sanu would likely jump over. Maybe she wanted Sanu to die as well, because she felt I unfair that she was able to love her child when Fanta couldn't.
Fanta had problems from the begining of the novel. She never liked Fomba and always mistreated him by pulling his ears and making fun of him, she never liked Aminata because she knew that Aminata would get married to the chief. I believe that Fanta was shaken up by the way she was treated by the males on the boat, because in the village she was never treated in a cruel way. I think that she killed her baby and Sanu's baby because she never wanted them find out that they were owned and were slaves when the babies would grow up. I dont think she was jealous because if she was jealous she would never kill her child.
I beleive Fanta was trying to protect the babies from facing the hardships they endured. Even though she went at it the wrong way, Fanta truly beleived that the Toubabs intentions were that they were going to cook and eat them. We can clearly see that she was not in the right mental state and further in the book, we see that Fanta lost all connection to reality by refusing and attacking to the Toubabs, when in reality she could not do anything but just follow orders.
I agree with both Lula and Alex; Fanta was trying to save her baby. Although Fanta is an unlikeable character from the beginning due to the way she treated Aminata, we see that she is actually kinder and more vulnerable throughout the book. Fanta loved her child but because she had just gone through so many traumas at the time o her pregnancy, I believe she became a little insane and unable to differentiate from right or wrong.Fanta thought that she was protecting her baby from the Toubab's. So when she did the unthinkable and through her child over board, I think reality hit her and she couldn’t stand seeing another baby so she killed Sanu’s child.
Fanta did that because she was feeling insecure about the whole situation she was experiencing I guess the stress got to her Aminata was to be the new wife of her husband that she was having a baby for and she knew he would love Aminata more than her. Also she thought the Toubabs were going to cook her but they really were going to enslave them and she didn’t want her child growing up speaking their language and being slaves.
