After reading The Book of Negroes and A thousand Splendid Suns which similarities did you find between some of the characters in the novels.

  1. There are two scenes that I find similar between Thousand Splendid Suns and The Book of Negroes. In both the books the author has shown the women of abuse in different ways, one way of abuse is through Rasheed and secondly the women are abused through toubabus and other Africans. One more scene that I find common is between Laila's father and Lindo, because both of them were more like intellects. Lindo let Aminata read and write which was not allowed, and Laila's father believed in education for women.

  2. I find that both Mariam and Aminata both felt like they deserve freedom. They deserved to be equal to everyone else. To have an education to learn new things. Both of them had that determination to learn new things. When their lives felt apart, they felt lost. Both of them lost a parent or two and then they were shipped far from their homes.

  4. I also agree with Emilio because both Aminata and Mariam were very intelligent girls. Aminata was very lucky to have Mr Lindo as her master, because he actually let her read and write which was not accepted by other white people while Mariam had Mullah Faizullah who taught her how to read and write and preached her the bible. They were both determined to gain knowledge and recieve education, but in both the books something eventually happened to them( Mariam being mistreated by Rasheed and Aminata being mistreated by Appleby) and other family members.

  6. Throughout both novels, I noticed a similarity mainly between Aminata and Mariam. I believe both of these women were physically and emotionally abused by men. I also noticed they both lacked in freedom and some privileges, like education even though they were both given secretive education.

  7. I agree with what Ziniira stated that both Aminata and Mariam endured physical and emotional abuse by men they were associated with. But similarities that I noticed were that both Aminata and Mariam experienced rape at a young age and were mistreated in society. In addition, both females were passionate and devoted in learning, even though they were discourage to not receive an education.

  8. I agree with what everyone has said so far. Two characters that caught my eye in being similar through the two novels are Georgia and Mullah Faizullah. This two characters loved Mariam and Aminata when no one really did. They taught them each every skill they knew. Mullah the Koran, While Georgia how to work in the indigo fields. These two characters play big roles in both Mariams and Aminatas Life.
