Are the Suns Really that Splendid
Throughout the book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, one of the main characters (Mariam), endures a lot of neglect, abuse, emotional as well as physical pain. When she finally gains that love she always wanted, she commits a crime and is sentenced to death. My question is with all the adversary Mariam went through, do you think that she deserved to be executed? Was killing Rasheed wrong? Or was it the fact that she took a father away from a son that admired him so much? Tell me what you think?

I think it all has to with different opinion. Yes, factually, Mariam was executed. But to Mariam, it was an act of redemption (because she feels that she killed Nana and now Rasheed, which she feels bad for because of Zalmai) and a way to be free. I think that because of all the things that she went though, she wanted closure and a quick death to free her from her misery.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think Mariam deserved to be executed. Mariam became my hero when she killed Rasheed because to me, it showed bravery and love for Laila. Remember when Tariq told Laila something like he would kill for her? Mariam killed for Laila and then sacrificed herself for her happiness. So in my eyes, Mariam took the action Tariq couldn't, therefore proving she loves Laila just as much or even more than Tariq.
I agree with you totally. Although Mariam felt she deserved it and it was the right thing to do , i feel that she didn't have to because who would have known it was them. They wear Burqas so no one really knew how they looked plus Rasheed could have been killed by anyone. I highly doubt they had forensic science in Afghanistan, plus who really cared for Rasheed anyways.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you and although being executed seems like a horrible way to die, and I agree, the ending of Mariams life was a good way to end her story. I do believe that Mariam could have easily run away with Laila, Tariq, Aziza and Zalmai without bein cause because of the burqa he wears, I can't picture how Mariam would fit into the new life that they had. She would probably feel that she was in their way and just and old woman that would eventually need taking care of, and as for Zalmai, she couldn't even bear looking at him before they fled becuse of the guilt she felt for killing the only father he loved so much, I don't think she could have lived with him the rest of his life watching him ask Laila whenhis father would be back, I think that's one of the reasons she chose bot to flee with them as well.
ReplyDeleteEven though Mariam was killed, I don’t believe that she deserved it , because to me after going through so much misery all those years she would eventually end up taking her anger out, which was by killing Rasheed. And even though Mariam knew she would be executed after Killing Rasheed, she still did it because she believed she did it for a good cause which was saving Laila and her children. Therefore, the act of Killing Rasheed wasn’t wrong it was actually a unselfish thing to do just to save others.
ReplyDeleteI don't think its whether she deserved it or not, because through out the novel Mariam just wanted someone to love her and for her to love back. Because the love she was given she was able to overcome her fear of Rasheed and was able to save Laila's life, she believed that was more important than anything else and she was willing to pay the consquence. I think killing Rasheed was the right thing to do especially in that situation because if she did not kill him he would have killed Laila, and Mariam could not lose her because she was the only person to truly love her. Instead of running away with them and putting them into danger she chose to stay behind for to reasons the first like I said was to keep them out of danger, the second reason was to punish herself for killing Zalmai's father, even though he deserved it. She took his father away and she could not face him. Overall I think was Mariam did was heroic, and the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone. I like Mariam a lot, I don't think she deserved to die but it was necessary for the situation they were in. Mariam became a strong character for killing Rasheed and taking the blame for his death. I think she took the blame because she need to give back and not be a burden anymore. If she went with Laila like Sharal said she would be a burden on Laila and Tariqa. It was a perfect way to end her life, she is a hero.
ReplyDeleteI think Mariam did not deserve to be executed and I also think that her murdering Rasheed was actually very heroic. Rasheed was the devil and his death was a wonderful thing. If I was Mariam, I would only feel sorrow for Zalmai because now he’ll be forced to live his life without a father, just like Mariam.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ayan, I believe Mariam did not deserve to be executed. What she did to Rasheed in my mind was a good and courageous thing to do. If she did not commit this act then she would probably end up dead so would Laila. It showed her true characteristics of being loyal to Laila, unselfish, and lastly brave. I believe this act was enough for her in her mind to be killed and executed because she finally stood up for something in her life and was truly happy at the time of her death.
