Something that i like about Aminata is that she has a lot of skills that benefit her in the long run. For example, in the beginning of the novel when Medcine Man allows her to stay with him because she can speak many languages as well as help him catch babies. This helped her escape the treatment from the white people for a while until Medcine Man passed away and everything was then back to normal.
ReplyDeleteAminata is a very determine person. Every place she went to she set a goal to learn the language and to find a way to work to support herself. Also she's a independent person because she always finds a way to find shelter and food. I wish I had any of Aminata characteristics but I learned a lot by reading this book.
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm only half way through the book, because it's the second book I'm supposed to read, one of my favourite characteristics of Aminata is the fact that she doesn't only care for herself and only her survival. While she's on her journey to the indigo plantation, there a few times where she helps someone so they do not get a beating or worse. I think this really gave her the good karma that lead Georgia to care and mother her when she first arrived at the plantation. After she's sold to Solomon Lindo I admire the person she becomes years after when she decides to go to New York because she can't wait for Chekura forever, and I especially applaud her when she leaves Soloman, it was long waited for and I was beginning to think she would never regain her freedom but, being the strong person that she is, Aminata found a way to regain her freedom and prove that she is not just an object.
ReplyDeleteOne of the characteristics that I like about Aminta is her determination. Aminta has a strong determination, she was determined since her arrival to America to return home to Africa. Her determination leads her to achieve freedom, and return back home. It makes her survive and shows her strength. With her determination she writes her own book rather than others writing it for her and she even travels into Africa to find her home. Knowing there would be danger. Aminta’s determination is displayed throughout the book and all the parts I mentioned above. I feel as if Aminta and I have similar traits, but I cannot compare to her characteristics. I think we have determination and caring for others in common. However, Aminta’s characteristics go beyond mine.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Makilpriya. I like the fact that Aminata is determined to accomplish what she wants to do in life. She always wanted to go back to her home village and never stopped thinking about how she can get back. She always thougt of how she can get back and even asks other people. For example, Aminata asked Sam when she was staying at his tauvern with Solomon about how she can get back to Africa. I also like that she is patient. She does not really show her anger and rage on others for her misfortunes and even learns how to read and write while she is in the U.S because she knows it will take her time to get back to Africa. I am also a determined person like Aminata and strive to work hard, however, Aminata exceeds my level and is much more determined than I am.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bara'a and Makilpriya when they state that one of Aminata's significant character traits is determination. This is displayed in several important events throughout the entire novel. From the boat ride overseas to the complications that she faced in America, she demonstrated a clear character of determination in every difficult situation she had to overcome. I believe everyone has this trait, and they use it in any situation they feel strongly motivated in accomplishing. Some have more than others, but overall everyone carries determination within to a certain extent. Aminita is an admirable person who possesses a great amount of determination throughout her life.
ReplyDeleteOne characteristic I like about Aminata is her ability to listen to the advice that people give her. Also Aminata has an incredible ability of adapting to her different situations. Example when Aminata arrives at the indigo plantation she is able to learn, how to make indigo, which items she could trade for valuables, and even how to speak english from Mamed. Her ability to adapt and learn are key elements to her survival
ReplyDeleteOne characteristic I admired about Aminata was her determination. She was determined to find her family, she would always think about it and she never gave up. I also like how she was determined to escape from her life as a slave and get back to her village in West Africa.
ReplyDeleteThe one characteristic that I love about Aminata is that she tries to learn about whatever she can and how she could use it to her advantage. This is shown a lot throughout the book like when she learns how to read and how she learns about all the medications from Georgia. I don't think I have this quality at all but I do feel that like Aminata I don't give up easily. I'm not just going to say no I can't do this, I'm going to try to figure out a way to get through it. Then if I can't do this on my own I go out and ask people to give me hints and to help me figure out of how I can actually get through the situation.
ReplyDeleteYes i believe i have the same trade as aminata. that is the trade of catching babies.
ReplyDeleteSeriously i believe the skills aminata have, have allowed her to survive such a long journey and go through so many ordeals like she did. We know that the medicine man favoured her becuase she was a baby catcher and spoke more than one language, so no doubt she had it easier in many parts of the novel thanks to her skills. One characteristic i like about her, is that she is very determined, and this is not shown in just one passage of the book but shown all throughout the novel, she is very determined for example to one day go back home and she stays motivated.
She must have been a strong character to endure all the hardship she did throughout her life. Watching her parents murdered in front of her. Seeing men and women fight and get killed. She's even endured hunger and thirst. So I would agree her determination and desire to be free was what drove her and made her a generally strong women.

ReplyDeleteOne memorable characteristic that comes to mind when I think about Aminata is her flexibility skills. For instance, the ability that she is capable to become accustomed to new languages, new environmental surroundings and also her skill of only using practical information for her advantage. For example when the luteniant needed her midwifery skills in order for her to deliver his mistresses child, in return of the favour she ended up receiving money and clothing which are some of the basic necessities to survive on. Therefore, this proves that her flexibility skills were crucial in shaping her will power to get her where she is today.
